Six-year-olds do not deserve to be sexualized. They deserve to be able to go to the bathroom without hassle. Making a child out to be a dangerous sexual being and focusing on a child’s body says a lot more about the adults who are doing so than it says about the child herself. source
Literally the only thing about a trans girl that I might ever boost or post.
I would let this article stand on it’s own, but I feel like I should add a few helpful statistics for the ignorant fucksticks who think that isolating trans* people, forcibly outing them, and/or enforcing specific-genitalia-only-bathroom-policies is somehow going to make women safer:
Claiming that sex offenders will dress as women in order to use the rest room and thus rape the women there is wrong. Sex offenders who are planning on raping someone in a bathroom are going to commit an act of sexual assault in a bathroom, and often will not bother to disguise their identity.
A friend of mine was raped in a (public) university bathroom. Her rapist (who had been a friend of hers) did not need to disguise his appearance to threaten her, force her into an isolated area, and rape her.
To suggest that the only reason men are refraining from raping women in public restrooms is the lack of welcome they will receive if they donned a dress and entered is beyond idiotic. Men have, and will continue, to rape women while they are dressed as and appear to be male. Men have, and will continue to, use the ladies’ room by mistake or when they cannot find the men’s room, without raping anyone. All men are not rapists. All rapists aren’t going to fucking care whether the sign on the door says “Women”.
That being said:
1. Trans* women are more likely to be the victims of violence/ sexual assault than other women. (source)2. At least 2/3rds of rapists are known by their victims. This study shows that for female victims, only 25% of sexual assaults were commited by strangers, compared to 30% stranger-perpetrated assault on male victims (source). In the united states, 48% of female rape victims (in 2010) were assaulted by a friend or acquaintance. 17% were assaulted by their intimate partner. (source) Some studies indicate as much as 91% of rapes are not commited by a stranger. (source)
3. 85% of Trans* women have experienced some form of harassment/threats/verbal abuse/discrimination based on their gender identity alone. (source)
4. Trans* women are women.
5. Trans* girls are girls.
6. Anybody who has ever been in a public ladies’ room knows that a) there will be privacy stalls available, so that you don’t have to let strangers see your business, and that b) people voluntarily remain clothed while outside of the stalls as well as c) no woman entering a restroom will have any concern whatsoever for the unexposed genitalia of another person in that res7troom, because she just wants to fucking pee.
7. If they were really concerned about whether or not female-at-birth children and their families would have ‘concerns’ or be ‘uncomfortable’ with a child using the bathroom, they should address those families. By increasing the education about trans* people and telling those girls and families that this child is NOT a boy, that she is using the bathroom that fits her gender identity, that she is NOT a sexual deviant or a threat to their safety would benefit everyone.
8. Trans* women are women.
9. Cannot fucking say that enough. TRANS WOMEN ARE WOMEN OKAY.
10. Fuck’s sakes.
In the creation of supercrip stories, nondisabled people don’t celebrate any particular achievement, however extraordinary or mundane. Rather, these stories rely on the perception that disability and achievement contradict each other and that any disabled person who overcomes this contradiction is heroic.
To believe that achievement contradicts disability is to pair helplessness with disability, a pairing for which crips pay an awful price. The nondisabled world locks us away in nursing homes. It deprives us the resources to live independently. It physically and sexually abuses us in astoundingly high numbers. It refuses to give us jobs even when a workplace is accessible, the speech impediment, the limp, the ventilator, the seeing-eye dog are read as signs of inability. The price is incredibly high.

Okay, long story short. I was raped and robbed a couple nights ago and my bank account was brought down to $0.00.
You, of course, don’t have to but I’ve set up a button on my blog for anyone who wishes to donate a little bit to my bank account. My parents are supporting me a little with gas money, but this will help mostly with me eating since I have to be on campus all day every day and I am only able to bring one meal’s worth of food to school or if I have an unexpected small expense.
One thing I will make sure y’all know if you don’t remember is that I am an alcoholic. I quit drinking and I am almost 48 hours sober, previously 5 days sober. Because me being raped and robbed was an unfortunate result of my drinking I am now 100% committed to quitting. However, it’d be unrealistic to say that I absolutely won’t relapse because it is VERY difficult to quit. To help, I am going to AA meetings and I stopped going to bars until I feel comfortable not drinking in such environments (I lost my ID anyway). So… if you were considering donating, know that there is a risk and I completely understand if you don’t trust me.
Also, I don’t get my first paycheck until 2/2/2012.
The button is in the top-left corner of my blog. Any amount is appreciated.
Thanks for the support everybody.
signal fucking boost
It was more an unfortunate result of there being a rapist and robber where you were (I mean it’s not your fault it’s the rapist’s fault only), but yes signal boost and good luck and courage for your quitting of alcohol, I really hope you’ll manage it and get the money you need.
WHILE WE’RE ON THE TOPIC:
Other things I must resist the urge to snark about: Feminist-ish friends saying they would buy a book if it had more rape jokes.
Wow, I don’t even know what to say about that… ( I still can’t even imagine how one can enjoy rape jokes… Well maybe I can understand when it’s a survivor making jokes around when talking about… to kind of conjure… like mocking society to reclaim pain and all that kind of things…. but the other kinds of these jokes I really don’t understand.)

Attention: Tomorrow (12/5/2012) Save Wiyabi Project, Western Native Voice, and the Native Youth Leadership Alliance are hosting an emergency day of action to demand that the Violence Against Women Act is passed. Congress ends on December 15th and, and then VAWA expires.
Please join us on the bridge in Pablo, Montana (in front of Salish Kootenai Tribal College) to demand safety and respect for Indian Country.

OOPs, I’m probably too late to post this, sadly I can’t go there because I live in Switzerland and I can’t even like them on Facebook because I don’t have a facebook account…

Dear Mr. Peter Taksøe-Jensen, the Danish Ambassador to the United States,
As a transgender woman and activist in New York City, I’ve been educating people about the challenges and triumphs of transgender women, and most recently the case of Guatemalan refugee Ms. Fernanda Milan has moved me.
Fernanda Milan is a 22-year-old transgender woman who sought refuge in Denmark following her persecution by vigilantes and state agencies in Guatemala. Life expectancy for transgender people in Guatemala is just 25 years, and there are no transgender people there over the age of 35, as a result of systematic persecution and extra-judicial killings by vigilante groups, with the tacit approval of the police, judiciary and government.
Research suggests that as many as 60 transgender people have been murdered in Guatemala in the last 10 years (in a country with only just over twice the population of Denmark), and countless more have simply “disappeared”. This makes it the second most dangerous place on Earth (after neighbouring Honduras) for trans people.
Trans people in Guatemala are routinely and comprehensively denied access to education, employment, medical care, social services and protection; indeed the police actively harass and assault them. As a result of this they have no option but to engage in sex work for their own survival, and this makes trans people particularly vulnerable to attacks by vigilante groups.
Fernanda Milan faces all these threats and more, she was deliberately targeted by police before her escape to Denmark because she was a spokesperson for the transgender human rights campaign organization in Guatemala OASIS. Returning her to Guatemala will put her in clear danger of assault and killing because of this. Fernanda is due to be deported from Denmark today because the previous Danish government opted out of an agreement that persecution on the grounds of gender identity should be recognized as criteria for granting asylum.
With this ruling, the Danish government is choosing to ignore the alarming rates of persecution of transgender people, specifically in Latin America, where 85% of all murders of trans people occur there. The reality is that Fernanda will die if Denmark deports her.
I plead that the Danish government, a respected and democratic country, reconsider its decision to return Fernanda Milan to certain death in Guatemala. We need to send a message that all people, no matter their race, economic status, employment, gender identity and sexuality, are worthy of dignity and life. Fernanda deserves to have a safe space where she can continue to shine her light and experiences on the world.
You can hear Fernanda tell her story here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DbjerOkVQtI&feature=player_embedded
I’ve fallen in love with her as a sister and I know you will love her too.
Sincerely,
Janet Mock
